Focus on Immunity   (continued)

The first elderberry study (Jul 10, 2020) reviews the studies used by Commission E (Europe) to approve the use of elderberry for the treatment of colds and flu. The main issue with the flu virus is its ability to mutate into new forms, making it hard to design an effective vaccine. This is why Commission E recommends a holistic alternative to bolster our natural immunity against all viral and bacterial forms.   [16]

A second elderberry study (Mar 2017)   [17] investigated its impact on the immune properties of macrophage and dendritic cell lines. Elderberry contain 2 powerful phytonutrients (anthocyanins and procyanidins)   [18] which have been shown clinically to provide therapeutic value in various inflammatory diseases.

Another randomized clinical study with air-travelers’   [19] found that the elderberry group suffered significantly shorter durations of their cold (reduced by one half). WOW.

The first quercetin study (Feb 2020)   [20] gave quercetin to a group of chickens and monitored their immune cells and found that quercetin dramatically improved their immune function.

An earlier quercetin study (2016)   [21] found that it inhibited the entry of the H5N1 flu virus into cells, thus preventing infection. This makes it a very effective preventive strategy.

The first echinacea study (Dec 2020)   [22] assessed human trials which reported changes in cytokine levels in response to echinacea supplementation, the results were consistent with a decrease in the pro-inflammatory cytokines that play a role in the progression of the “cytokine storm” and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), both of which are factors that play a significant role in the death of COVID-19 patients. Although there have been no trials using echinacea specifically on Covid, those results certainly justify such studies in the future.

An earlier echinacea study (2014) assessed its immunomodulatory effects on T-cells and found enhanced cytokine responses that would help to suppress viral invasion.   [23]

All of these combined studies suggest that Shaklee’s Triple Defense Boost will us help fine-tune our immune response(s) to an infection, and Shaklee’s clinical studies certainly demonstrated a significant boost to natural killer cell activity by 300%, while also increasing the proliferation of other critical immune cells by 580%.   [24]
